techniques for "back-of-the-envelope" calculations in physics.
Most include either QuickBasic or Visual Basic listings along with the
Java source code. A few include HP48 or Postscript listings also. There
are also Java programs on optics: one on matrix ray optics, six on
matrix wave optics, and several on ellipsometry. What's new: plotting
electrostatic and magnetic fields (21 Sep 98). |

Fresnel
diffraction - straightedge or single slit of variable width. Intensity
pattern; Graph of intensity; Relation to the Cornu Spiral as an animated
graphic. |
||
|
Fresnel
diffraction patterns of (a) a straight-edge and (b) a single slit of
variable width are displayed as intensity patterns; intensity plots;
Cornu Spiral constructions. The relations between the Fresnel
diffraction patterns and the Cornu Spiral construction are demonstrated.

the lense can be varied. Real and virtual images, parameters and traces
are viewed graphically. |

The
most charming example of chromatic dispersion is a rainbow. When white
sunlight is intercepted by a drop of water in the atmosphere. Some of
the light refracts into the drop, reflects from the drop's inner surface,
and then refracts out of the drop. As with the prism, the first
refraction separates the sunlight into its component colors, and the
second refraction increases the separation. And the rainbow is there in
the sky. This applet shows the physics of rainbow.(Fu-Kwun Hwang) |

Pro
Solv is a software package that can solve mathematical based problems
symbolically or numerically. The user can describe a system to Pro Solv
in terms of its components and initial or final conditions and Pro Solv
will return a mathematical expression for the behavior of that system.
After the solution is formed, the user can view and manipulate a three
dimensional representation of the system. Contact Problem Solving

Quantum
states of the light field, introduction and experiment |
The
page intends to give a non-technical, intuitive introduction to the
quantum theory of the light field. Recent measurements are employed to
illuminate abstract quantum mechanical concepts such as the uncertainty
relation, the wave packet, quantum noise, squeezed light, Wigner
functions etc. using the concrete experimental example of the freely
propagating light field. |
